Coleman CPX-6 Hanging LED Lantern
While my 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has a longer wheelbase, it’s still too short for me to sleep in it. So last year, I built a retractable sleeping platform that would allow me to be extremely mobile when I was on a scouting or hunting trip. I can now just pull my gear out and sleep in the back of the Jeep.
It became obvious during the build process that I was going to need a good light source for the back of the Jeep. I wanted something that could quickly transition from my campsite to inside the Jeep. After looking around at some flashlight options, I ended up buying the Coleman CPX 6 Easy Hanging LED Lantern.
I’ve always liked Coleman products. I’ve used their propane lanterns and stoves almost exclusively for years. I even use their backpacking lanterns and stoves. So, I didn’t think twice about buying this lantern. I knew that it would be rugged and widely supported.
The base of the lantern is solid and balanced. I like the compact size and the rugged plastic body. Although it didn’t come with a case, it easily stowed in the back of the Jeep with no troubles. This light looks and feels like it will handle the beating I’m going to be throwing at it in the years to come.
The LED light was more than adequate. I could easily see how this lantern is going to replace my propane set up. Although I would prefer a variable setting, the two beam level settings worked well. The full power setting was great for outside activities like cooking. The lower-level beam worked great for reading inside the Jeep.
The hanging lantern uses a tough, velcro strap that can be set up in a couple configurations. I could easily hang the light on a tree or post. The strap also made it easy to attach to the inside roof of my Jeep.
My one gripe for this lantern was the recessed power switch. I often found myself fumbling around on all the sides looking for the for the button. It seems like Coleman could redesign things so it would be easier to distinguish the front from the other sides.
The CPX 6 system is a much needed improvement on the propane system. I’ve never really been happy with dealing with the mantles, propane bottles and hot lanterns. The CPX 6 system provides all the flexibility of propane without the fuss. My lantern stayed charged throughout the duration of my 3 day hunt. I also enjoyed how quiet it was. I really don’t miss the hiss of my propane lantern.
The CPX 6 system uses a rechargeable power cartridge than can be switched out when needed. The cartridge has an indicator that shows when it is fully charged. I now have two cartridges that I charge before I head out into the woods. I can also use an adapter to charge the cartridge with my Jeep. Coleman even makes a CPX 6 cartridge that can be filled with D size batteries.
I’m already on the look out for other CPX 6 products. I’m also already thinking about how I can attach this system to a solar panel. Most of my hunts in Arizona have plenty of sun to spare. I think it would be great to be able to power all my equipment while I’m out hiking on the mountain.
I would recommend the Coleman CPX 6 Easy Hanging LED Lantern to hunters and outdoorsmen alike. I might even buy an extra one for emergencies around the house. Nice job, Coleman.
